14 Nov Diabetics must beware of fat hiding in these places…
Since fat has no smell or taste, only greasy texture, it is easy to hide. This chart shows you some places fat is hiding. If you look towards the bottom right you will see hard cheese. Just 30 grams of hard cheese has 10 grams of fat. 1/3 of cheese is saturated fat.
Another place fat is hiding is in refined foods that boast sugar free or low carb. They are often substitute that sugar with fat. Notice here a blueberry muffin is on par with a sirloin steak. There are also high fat products in the veggie world. As you can see humus is way up there. Avocados are high on the list as well as are nuts and seeds. Ideally you consume 1/3 an avocado a day or ½ every other day and only small quantities of nuts and seeds daily. Again these are unsaturated fats, will not raise your bad cholesterol, and very important to have in your diet in a limited amount.
The other place fat is hiding is in oils. Safflower, vegetable, canola oil and yes olive oil too! All oils contribute to cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance. Let me say that again… All oils contribute to cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance. The Mediterranean diet that is loaded with oil was only successful because it was also loaded with fresh fruits and veg that counteracted the negative effects of oil.
